Joining the conversation

I started blogging in 2004 because I wanted to have a personal journal to share with my friends, I was going abroad for the first time and I figured it was the easiest and fastest way to share my experiences. After a few months it morphed into a private repository of my thoughts, a post for me was just a remainder of my ideas accessible online.

Back to school and research in 2005 I used magazines and journals as my primary information source but as I was looking deeper my online behavior started to change, I found that relevant information was shared in blogs and podcasts and they quickly became my preferred information source. Influenced by the Participation Age message I decided to start a couple of blogs to share what I was getting from the blogosphere, the goal was to pay continuous partial attention to any web related news and post my ideas about those news in English and Spanish.

With the information overflow my posts were becoming a collection of links with some sensationalist content trying to find out what is the next hit on the web. When I began posting comments in other blogs I noted that there were interesting opinions too that allowed me to discover other interesting blogs. I realized I was just one click away from other people to know me and felt that my blog provider didn’t allow me to express who I am so I decided to move to my own WordPress install.

While I was tweaking an Ajax theme to power my blog I got an opportunity to work in the US so my priorities changed and I decided to disconnect myself from the blogosphere last December to get fresh ideas from the real world. My trip back home made me understand what I can bring to the community and try not to limit myself to collect ideas and links from other posts, that’s why I picked three areas that I generally pay attention to where I can provide interesting reports and articles to English and Spanish readers.

Web 2.0 is a term that it’s being used to express ideas reflecting how the future of the Web is shaping. Although some think it is just marketing hype I agree with the ones that define it as a place where users are becoming producers. The Web was invented in the Information Age as a place where information flows rapidly without geographical barriers, Web 2.0 as part of the Participation Age is set to break down the mass communication barrier, the title of this blog reflects the intent to become a useful content producer and not just a passive user.

This blog is launched today to celebrate the opening of the first wiki, 11 years ago. Another fundamental tool of this conversational web, what are you waiting to join?
